Cabo San Lucas vs. San José del Cabo: what stands out most
The biggest difference is the atmosphere. Cabo San Lucas has more resorts and more visitors, and the area around Medano Beach and the marina gets especially busy during spring break. San José del Cabo feels calmer and more local, with a greener, more tropical setting and a historic downtown made for strolling.

The beaches follow the same pattern. If you want easy swimming close to your hotel, Médano in Cabo San Lucas is the safer bet. In San José del Cabo, most beaches have stronger surf, so head to calmer spots like Palmilla or Acapulquito for a swim.
Logistics matter too. San José del Cabo is just 15–20 minutes from Los Cabos International Airport (SJD), while Cabo San Lucas is about 40 minutes away. The two towns are roughly 30–40 minutes apart along the Tourist Corridor, so pick one as your home base instead of going back and forth every day.

Cabo San Lucas or San José del Cabo: which one is right for you?
There’s no single right answer, but here’s how we’d choose:
- First-time visitors and groups of friends: Cabo San Lucas, for the energy, the marina, and the nightlife.
- Couples: Either works. Go with Cabo San Lucas for a livelier trip, or San José del Cabo for a quieter, more romantic one.
- Foodies and art lovers: San José del Cabo, especially on a Thursday during Art Walk season.
- Families: Cabo San Lucas if calm-water beach days at Médano are the priority; San José del Cabo if quieter evenings and a quick airport transfer matter more.
- Watching your budget? Cabo San Lucas tends to be easier on the wallet, especially at 4-star hotels (about US124 vs. US198 per night on average).
- Catching an early flight? Stay in San José del Cabo.

No matter where you stay, the desert is within reach
Whether you base yourself in Cabo San Lucas or San José del Cabo, a desert adventure fits easily into your trip. The Cactus Tours adventure park is located in Migriño, on the Pacific side, about 20–25 minutes from Cabo San Lucas and 50 minutes from San José del Cabo, with round-trip transportation from hotels in both towns. Two easy ways to add some adrenaline to your trip:
- Sky Bike: A Guinness World Record Holder that lets you pedal high above the desert landscape.
- Park Pass: An all-inclusive day pass that bundles several of the park’s adventures into one day.
And during whale season (roughly December through April), you don’t need a boat to see them: humpback and gray whales can often be spotted right from the beach, and even during your desert tour.
